Bathroom Basins - Sinks
Basins, also known as bathroom sinks or washbasins, are an essential choice when shopping for bathroom products. Used on a daily basis for routine tasks such as brushing teeth, washing your face and hands, shaving, makeup and various other applications, the basin needs to have practical value based on where it is used.
There are a few different types of basins, it is important to understand the differences
Basins come in a variety of shapes, colours and sizes, however all basins can be categorised based on how they are attached as a fixture in your bathroom. Here are some details about each major type:
- Above counter basins - Sometimes referred to as vessel sinks, these basins are the most frequently seen basins, and for good reason, they are easy to install, look beautiful, come in many visually striking designs, leave the most space for storage inside the vanity cabinet and seperate the washing area from the bench, reducing the chances of splashing. Above-counter basins can be used on every bench top type (except ceramic bench tops, which have an integrated sink anyway) are the easiest basins to replace or repair if damaged, and your installer will prefer them too, as they often require a simple cut-out in the vanity counter top, before being attached via waste and then siliconed to seal gaps.
- Under counter basins - Often used by people who enjoy an easier time wiping down the bench, under counter basins are a great option for low maintenance. Due to the placement of the sink within the confines of the vanity, this type of sink is also the least likely to get damaged, making it a popular choice for commercial bathrooms or for bathrooms with high traffic, but low storage needs. Installation of this type of basin is costly, due to the need to epoxy the sink to the vanity top from underneath, and then cut and polish a suitable opening in the vanity top, this increases the labour cost of cutting vanity tops such as the engineered stone tops substantially. Under-counter basins leave the least storage space inside the cabinet, due to occupying significant space beneath the counter.
- Inset and Semi-inset basins - these two terms are almost interchangeable, and you would be forgiven for mixing the two. Semi inset and inset basins both have a component below the bench, and a component above. The primary difference is that a basin is referred to as "inset" if the lip sitting above the counter top is minimal, often less than 12mm thick, otherwise all other basins that sit partially above and partially below are referred to as "semi-inset". Inset and semi inset basins sit between above-counter and under-counter both literally and also from a use-case basis as they share pros and cons with the prior two types mentioned. This is because they are easier to install/uninstall than under-counter basins, but a little more challenging than above counter basins. They also often have less space occupied beneath the bench than an under-counter basin. Generally, semi-inset basins have become less trendy over time, as the design options are not as striking as above counter basins, and the cleaning practicality is not as good as under-counter basins. These basins have become used less in favour of the aforementioned types.
- Single piece counter top basins - these basins are often referred to as single mould vanity tops with integrated sinks, and that is conveniently a literal definition of what these are. The most cost-effective and low maintenance type of sink, due to less gaps to try and get your hands into when trying to wipe it. These basins feature all the benefits of the undermount sink, at a significantly reduced total price. The catch? These types of basins are not as attractive or as striking as the other designs, and come in limited colours and styles due to losing their cost advantage with the higher expenses when trying to produce them in colours and unusual designs. Single piece tops are best for pure practicality, when you're not fussed about the look as much as you are concerned for a low maintenance bathroom.
- Wall hung basins - As the name suggests, wall hung basins can be hung against the wall, without the need for a bench or cabinet to support the weight. These basins are great for situations where concealed storage beneath the bathroom sink is not necessary, such as in commercial bathrooms or in bathrooms with very tight spaces.
Basins come in various colours, shapes and sizes, its important to confirm the space you are working with before purchasing
Your choice of basin may be tough to make due to the large selection of different basins. A good place to start perhaps, is matching your bathtub. If you don't have a bathtub, you can look for a shape or design that fits the look you are going for, whilst being as fit for purpose as possible.
You may need a basin for a regular 460mm bench, or maybe you have a slim 360mm depth that you're trying to work with. If you're lucky, your bench is 520mm and can fit just about any basin. Regardless, it is important to check the details of your bathroom vanity and vanity top to ensure that the basin is right for you.
Generally speaking, all people prefer a sink as large as possible, this enables you to comfortably wash your face, brush your teeth, and in some cases, even shave your legs, without the feeling of cramming yourself into a little sink. In some cases that is not practical and a small basin must be chosen in its place. Based on numerous feedback from customers, we found that the goldilocks zone between large and small sinks tends to be at approximately 340mm-420mm in depth, and 400mm-600mm in width. A prime example of a sink in the Goldilocks zone is the Dove or the Rolo collection of basins.
The disadvantages of a sink that is too large, are mostly centred around the cleaning of it, as large sinks tend to have a significant section of the sink where water rarely ever reaches, and only droplets from splashing will reach those edges. This is important, as it is these spots that very rarely receive running water that will collect dust spots, and will frequently need to be wiped down. A larger sink is also more likely to be damaged, simply because there is more chance that something will hit it when compared to a small sink.
In cases where you are installing two sinks (or more) on a vanity, it is important to ensure that there is adequate bench space once the size of the basins is taken into account. You also need to consider proportions and appearance, as two oversized basins rarely look good on a double vanity. Often smaller basins (max 480mm wide, or less if the vanity is significantly shorter) are chosen for double vanities with a total length of 1500mm or less, whilst vanities that are larger have more flexibility.
All vanity basins ship Australia-wide, with or without a vanity
