Bathroom Vanity Tops

Vanity counter tops, also known as bench tops or slab tops, are an essential part of completing the look of your bathroom vanity. You may have a multitude of options that are compatible with your preferred cabinet choice. Browse a large collection and configure to your needs.

There are a few main types of vanity tops, based on the needs of your bathroom, and your style preferences.

Bathroom vanity tops are most commonly engineered quartz stone or ceramic tops with integrated basins, however top options have become more diverse over the years, here is a rundown of the most common:

  • Ceramic tops: Made from the same material as your toilet pan, these are the most economical option for sizes up to 1200mm. You can get an integrated sink for the lowest total cost, and it is the easiest style to clean due to having the least gaps and touch points. Ceramic tops have a high heat resistance and easily tolerate the hottest things used in a bathroom, such as a blow dryer or hot wax, however are brittle and cannot be repaired once chipped.
  • Polymarble tops: A durable material that is more easily shaped than porcelain into straight lines, most polymarble tops similarly feature integrated sinks. For sizes larger than 1200mm, polymarble tops begin to become more cost-effective than ceramic tops, as it is easier to mold the large product without warping. Polymarble tops may often be cut on the edges, making them possible to use for vanities that fit between walls. Polymarble has less heat resistance than ceramic, and is easier to damage, however it is less brittle than ceramic and in some cases may be repaired.
  • Engineered Stone (Quartz) tops: Quartz stone tops have become very popular in kitchens and bathrooms, and for good reason. Quartz stone is frequently found in a multitude of interesting colours and can be cut to feature a bathroom sink that sits on-top, semi-recessed or under the counter. Quartz may be repaired or polished in some cases, however is less easy to keep clean than ceramic or polymarble.
  • Sintered Stone tops: Sintered stone is a newer type of material used in making tops, inspired by the make of glazed porcelain tiles, sintered stone tops are some of the most durable and difficult to scratch vanity tops available. Sintered stone is higher performing than quartz in almost every category, including heat resistance, scratch resistance, easier cleaning, and overall durability. Sintered stone however, in a similar manner to ceramic, is brittle and repairing a damaged top is difficult. Still however, if a top is that resistant to damage, it is unlikely to get damaged in the first place.
  • Timber tops: Timber tops are arguably the most beautiful type of top, however also require the most maintenance. Typically timber tops are laminated strips that are wax sealed and buffed to protect against moisture and wetness in the bathroom. Even so, due to the softness of the material, it is recommended to constantly dry down the top whenever water splashes on it. A beauitful type of top for a master ensuite, however we wouldn't recommend it for a bathroom that kids use.

It is about more than the material of the top, another important consideration is the dimensions and thickness.

The standard depth of vanity tops is approximately in the range of 12mm to 25mm. Some top makes can be made with a thicker edge finish. Commonly, in order to save costs and reduce weight, some tops can be "capped" at the ends with double laminations to increase the thickness. The most common example is quartz stone capped around the perimter to increase the thickness from 20mm to 40mm or 60mm.

The depth of a top is the distance from the wall to the front of the top. In Australia a large range of tops are approximately 460mm in depth. You can often find some large tops that go as deep as 500-520mm, and still in rare cases, people may request a 600mm depth for the bathroom, however that is typically too large and best left for the kitchen or laundry.

You may complete your vanity top with a basin

Vanity basins come in various styles, including basins that sit above the counter, basins that sit below the counter, and basins that are semi-inset, or semi-recessed. The most popular style is basins that sit above the counter, and for good reason. Homeowners often find the basin sink sitting above the counter is practical, elegant and easy to replace in the event of damage. It is also the most straightforward type of sink to install, so typically installation costs are lower. For those who need the lowest possible maintenance whilst cleaning, consider a sink that sits below the counter, or at least choose an above-counter sink where there is a smaller base at the bottom for an easier cleaning experience.
